About TaxByCounty

Free property tax data for every county in America, built with public data.

Our Mission

TaxByCounty exists to make government data about property taxes accessible and understandable. Property taxes are one of the largest recurring expenses for homeowners, yet comparing rates across counties has traditionally required digging through government databases and spreadsheets.

We take publicly available data from the U.S. Census Bureau and present it in a clear, searchable format so that homeowners, homebuyers, and researchers can quickly find and compare property tax information for any county in the United States.

The Data

All property tax data on TaxByCounty comes from the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. This is the same data used by government agencies, academic researchers, and policy analysts across the country.

Our dataset covers all 3,100+ counties and county equivalents in the United States, including:

  • Median property tax paid (overall, with mortgage, and without mortgage)
  • Median home value
  • Effective property tax rates (derived from median tax and median home value)
  • State and national comparisons

Census data is subject to margins of error and statistical suppression for small populations. We display the data as provided by the Census Bureau and note where values are unavailable. For the most current and authoritative tax information, we always recommend checking with your local county tax assessor.

Free and Open

TaxByCounty is completely free to use. There is no account required, no paywall, and no restrictions on accessing the data. We believe that public data should be publicly accessible.

The site is supported by advertising and affiliate partnerships. These never influence the data we present, which comes directly from the Census Bureau without modification.

Part of the ByCounty Network

TaxByCounty is part of the ByCounty Network, an independent data project that makes county-level government data accessible across multiple topics. Each site in the network focuses on a specific aspect of county data, all feeding into CountyScore.com as a comprehensive county comparison tool.

AI-Generated Content

Some narrative descriptions on TaxByCounty are generated using artificial intelligence (Claude by Anthropic). These AI-generated narratives help explain property tax data in plain language for each county and state page.

All AI-generated content is:

  • Based entirely on official data from the U.S. Census Bureau
  • Reviewed for accuracy and consistency
  • Clearly grounded in verifiable statistics — every number cited comes directly from Census ACS data
  • Supplemental to the primary data presentation, not a replacement for it

We believe AI assistance helps make government data more accessible and understandable, while the underlying numbers remain the authoritative source. For full details on how we use AI and process data, see our Methodology page.
